Understanding Root Canals
Deep decay may cause a tooth's nerve and pulp to become infected, inflamed, or irritated. Other factors that may also contribute include a crack or chip in the tooth, facial trauma, large fillings, and repeated dental procedures on the same tooth. Such teeth can be repaired or even saved with a root canal treatment.
A root canal treatment involves removing the nerve and pulp of the affected tooth. Then, we will clean and seal the inside. Teeth that do not receive the root canal treatment they need may cause the surrounding tissues to develop an infection. An abscess may also form, potentially leading to total tissue death of the tooth's pulp (or pulp necrosis).

What Happens During a Root Canal
As mentioned before, a root canal begins with the careful removal of the infected or inflamed pulp. We will then clean out and disinfect the inside of the tooth before filling and sealing it with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material. At the end of the procedure, we will restore the natural tooth with a crown or filling for protection, which will also have the added benefit of allowing the tooth to function like a natural tooth.
While root canals are a generally safe procedure, new infections may still occur afterward. Repeated root canal treatments in a single tooth, a problem with the dental restoration, an undetected crack in the tooth root, or a gradual breakdown of the inner sealing material may contribute. However, the procedure itself has a success rate greater than 95%.

Why GentleWave
According to a 2016 article in Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics, traditional root canals use instruments and treatment protocols to "remove tissue debris, bacteria, and biofilm from the root canal system." However, this system is quite complex, with apical-thirds and other anatomical areas that cannot be easily reached through conventional methods. As such, traditional root canal therapy can be less predictable when it comes to addressing tissue debris, bacteria, and biofilm in these anatomically challenging areas.
Conventional root canals also often require the removal of excessive dentin, which patients need for long-term success. However, removing this dentin may adversely affect the integrity of the root and may even lead to perforations, root fractures, and even extractions. The GentleWave System is the U.S. market's answer to these problems. Designed specifically for endodontics, it sets itself apart from other devices adopted from other medical fields.

What Makes the GentleWave System Different
GentleWave is a revolutionary new system that has made its way around multiple progressive endodontic practices around the United States. It uses a high-tech irrigation process that "harnesses optimized procedure fluids, vortical flow and broad-spectrum acoustic energies to debride and disinfect the root canal system." It can even reach spaces that are undetected or without a tool. Moreover, the GentleWave System does all this while remaining minimally invasive, leaving more of the tooth structure intact than a traditional root canal.
The GentleWave System utilizes its unique fluid delivery and control system with SoundFlow™ and SoundBAR™. Combined, the two provide an exponentially more efficient and effective fluid delivery process that provides both macro and microscopic cleaning. The SoundResults™ are clear: fluids that penetrate and clean complex root canal anatomy in a way traditional root canals are incapable of doing. Patients experience "a new level of clean with fast healing."

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why does it matter that I see an endodontist for my GentleWave procedure?
A. The GentleWave System was created especially for endodontists, who have an additional two to three years of specialized training beyond dental school. While all endodontists are dentists, not all dentists are endodontists. Endodontists are specialists in treating tooth pain and saving the tooth.
Q. Will the GentleWave procedure "kill" my tooth?
A. No. We indeed remove the pulp of the tooth during the root canal procedure. However, it will still function just as a natural tooth, and we will preserve the connection to the surrounding gums and bone.
Q. How many sessions will it take to complete the GentleWave procedure?
A. Most GentleWave procedures can be completed in a single session. Additionally, since the technology effectively disinfects and cleanses the root canal system, there is a low risk of root canal retreatment.
Q. How is the GentleWave procedure more minimally invasive than a traditional root canal?
A. Instead of using an excess of instrumentation, the GentleWave System uses a vortex of procedure fluids. As a result, most patients describe the treatment as relatively painless, especially if they have undergone traditional root canals in the past.
Q. Will I need a root canal retreatment after a GentleWave procedure?
A. As previously mentioned, there is a low risk of root canal retreatment with a GentleWave procedure. However, patients must still take proper care of the treated tooth after the treatment to further minimize this risk. Brush at least twice daily, floss at least once nightly, and avoid hard foods.
Q. Will my insurance cover the GentleWave procedure?
A. Since every insurance policy is different, the best way to get the answer to this question is to speak directly to a representative of your health insurance provider. We can help with this process. However, be aware that the procedure is typically not classified as a standard root canal treatment.
